Tony Belobrajdic is a full time self-taught professional artist who conducts training workshops both here in Sydney and overseas.
Born in Rijeka, Croatia in 1958, he studied Architecture & Engineering in his homeland, before moving to New York. He hosted his 1st solo show in 1985 in Croatia. Since 1989 he has been living and working as a freelance artist and illustrator in Sydney Australia. He has over 30 years’ experience painting and selling art.
Tony started drawing, with pencil. In his teenage years he wanted to become a sculptor, however, as this was too complicated and expensive, he started with oils and tempera. Master artists became his “silent mentors”. Rembrandt was the greatest influence. His palette was generally influenced and formed by Dutch 17th century painters. Atmosphere is important to him, also seeing the imperfections and artist brushstrokes that show that the artwork has been created by human hand.
Maritime themes are dominant in his paintings but also everyday urban scenes painted on location or after sketches and photographs taken on his travels. Having a more figurative style, Tony aims in time to develop a looser style that is closer to abstract – to forget about correct perspective, finely delineated drawings and all rules of illustration, and paint freely .
